Discover The Canary Island of Lanzarote

The Canary Islands have become one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. As this Spanish owned group of seven islands are blessed with a climate that delivers sunshine and warm temperatures all year round – even in winter. Yet they are located just a two hour flights from the Spanish mainland and around four hours from important markets such as Germany and the UK.

As a result of these twin advantages the Canaries collectively welcome over ten million tourists a year. Whilst the bulk of these visitors touch down on either Tenerife or Gran Canaria smaller islands such as Lanzarote still account for around one eighth of this influx – creating a buoyant tourist industry.

Lanzarote is located closer to the coast of Africa than the rest of her Canarian cousins and also experiences much les s in the way of rainfall. As a result it is much more arid and dry – boasting a weird and wonderful volcanic landscape that was forged by enormous eruptions in the 1730´s and again in 1824.

Getting to the island from the UK is simple as there are cheap Lanzarote flights available from most major airports. With a journey time of four hours. But make sure you book your Lanzarote airport transfers in advance of touching down at Arrecife. As there are no public buses connecting the terminal with the three main holiday resorts of Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise.

The bulk of visitors to the island arrive from the UK – with just over 80,000 British tourists spending their holidays in Lanzarote last month alone for example. And guests from the UK tend to prefer either self catering accommodation or all inclusive breaks – as these options appear to offer the best value for money. By contrast German and Spanish tourists are much more likely to book a room in one of over 200 hotels located across the island.

Which is the best resort? There are three to choose from – with both Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen offering reliable weather all year round. Costa Teguise is located towards the northern end of Lanzarote however and as a result the climate here can be a lot more patchy during the winter months.

Wherever you plan to stay make sure you take time out to explore this unique island. As there are some incredible lunar like landscapes to enjoy at the Timanfaya National Park along with the many works of the local artist César Manrique.
